Obituary: Grandma Campbell’s Cupcakes (c. 19??– 2023)

“She went too soon… and took our will to live with her.”

It is with a heavy heart, a heavier fork, and three years of unresolved grief that I finally pen this obituary for Grandma Campbell’s Cupcakes — those glorious little paper-cupped angels that vanished from the West Side Market in 2023 and left a frosting-shaped hole in all of us.

She didn’t just die. She was quietly euthanized sometime in 2023 while the rest of us were distracted by pumpkin-spice everything and arguing about whether the Guardians would ever win anything. One day the case sparkled with red velvet royalty and chocolate dreams topped with those perfect little frosting flowers. The next? A tragic, empty void where joy used to sit. The official cause of death: corporate cruelty, “changing consumer preferences,” and the universe’s cruel reminder that nothing good lasts forever in Cleveland.

Grandma Campbell’s wasn’t dessert. She was a full-blown emotional support carbohydrate. Moist cake that somehow stayed perfect even after a snowy ride home. Frosting so indecently rich it required its own apology letter. One bite and suddenly your worst day in Cleveland was… tolerable. She was the quiet hero who showed up for breakups, promotions, snow days, and “I made it through another February” parties.

I still remember my last meal with her. Summer 2023. I bought a mixed dozen like the indulgent queen I am, ate three in the car before I even left Ohio City, and whispered sweet nothings to the fourth. I had no idea it was goodbye. If I had known, I would have bought every last one and built a shrine in my freezer.

She Leaves Behind

  • Several abandoned diets that never recovered
  • A generation of Clevelanders still wandering the Market muttering, “But… where are the cupcakes?”
  • Stretch pants that miss her terribly
  • Me — still in mourning, stress-eating inferior imposters that taste like sadness and regret

In lieu of flowers, please send strong cocktails, therapy gift cards, or pitchforks. Or better yet, start a very serious campaign to bring her back. I’m not above emotional blackmail or a cupcake-shaped GoFundMe three years too late.

To whoever made the decision in 2023: May your future desserts be forever dry and your frosting always grainy.

Rest in eternal buttercream, sweet queen. You were far too good for this cruel, cupcake-less timeline.

I’ll be over here lighting a candle (and stress-eating whatever sad substitute I can find) while plotting my next indulgent adventure. Because if life can take Grandma Campbell’s Cupcakes from us, it can take anything. Might as well enjoy the survivors while they’re still warm.

What was your final meal with her? Drop your favorite flavor memory below. Let’s mourn together — preferably with wine and whatever consolation pastries we can scrounge up in 2026.

xoxo, Lyla Luscious
Still mourning since 2023. Still hungry. Never sorry.
