Guardians Look to Even Series vs. Yankees Tonight at Progressive Field
It’s a big one at the corner of Ontario and Carnegie tonight, Cleveland. The Guardians (37-31) host the New York Yankees (39-26) in Game 2 of a three-game set, with first pitch set for 6:40 PM EDT on Amazon Prime Video, TBS, and Guardians.TV. After dropping the opener on Monday night in 10 innings, Cleveland needs a bounce-back win to stay competitive in what is shaping up to be one of the best series of the 2026 season.
The Yankees are tied for first in the AL East with the Rays, while the Guardians lead the AL Central by two games over the White Sox. Every game in this head-to-head matchup has serious postseason implications, and Tribe Nation knows it.
Series Context: Rematch of a Rivalry Heating Up
These two clubs have been playing some of the most compelling baseball of June. The two American League contenders collided in the Big Apple last week for three games, ending with Cleveland winning twice as New York was outscored 15-10 on aggregate. But the Yankees answered back hard in Game 1 of this home-and-home rematch.
New York came away with a 7-5 win in 10 innings Monday night at Progressive Field, improving to 39-26 on the road this season. The Guardians, now 37-31, need Slade Cecconi to stop the bleeding tonight and get this series back to even before Wednesday’s finale.
On the Mound: Slade Cecconi vs. Gerrit Cole
Slade Cecconi (RHP, Cleveland) gets the ball for the Guardians tonight. Cecconi enters with a 3-5 record and 4.92 ERA on the season. Cecconi came to Cleveland in the trade that sent Josh Naylor to the Diamondbacks before the 2025 season, and the Yankees scored two runs on five hits off him in a 4-0 win last June — his only career start against New York.
- 2026 record: 3-5, 4.92 ERA, 54 SO
- He throws his four-seamer, sinker, and cutter a combined 76.7% of the time, relying on horizontal movement and deception — and represents the most hittable matchup for the Yankees of the three Guardians starters in this series.
Standing in his way is the formidable Gerrit Cole (RHP, New York), returning to Progressive Field just days after his last outing here. Cole is working his way back from a career-altering Tommy John surgery that wiped away all of his 2025 campaign, and gets another chance to put it all together tonight against Cleveland.
- 2026 record: 1-1, 2.00 ERA, 14 SO
- Cole’s strikeout rate sits at 20.6% — his lowest since 2016 — but he has walked just 5.9% of batters faced, and his fastball has averaged 96 mph, a tick above where it was pre-surgery.
- That strong velocity didn’t help Cole much against the Guardians last Wednesday, as he left too many pitches over the heart of the plate and ended up allowing three home runs.
- His lone road outing this season saw him strike out 10 in a 7-0 win over the Royals, and he’s never lost to the Guardians as a visitor — going 4-0 with a 2.38 ERA and 32 strikeouts in five all-time trips to Cleveland.
Opponent Scouting: Yankees Offense Grinding Without Judge
Aaron Judge is sidelined indefinitely with a stress fracture of the first rib on his right side and will be re-evaluated in about four to six weeks. That’s obviously a massive loss for New York, but the lineup has still shown plenty of teeth.
- As a team, the Yankees have hit .276 over their last 10 games and continue to lead the American League in runs scored for the season.
- Over the last ten games, Ben Rice (.341) and Trent Grisham (.382) have been the team’s most productive hitters, both providing strong on-base presence and consistent contact.
- Paul Goldschmidt (.220) and Anthony Volpe (.189) have struggled over the last two weeks — two lineup spots where Cecconi can look to work early in counts.
Players to Watch: Cleveland Side
🔴 José Ramírez (3B) — JoRam has been the heartbeat of this lineup all year long. He’s gotten off to a slow start by his lofty standards, but still has eight home runs and 20 stolen bases, with more walks than strikeouts. The veteran third baseman crushed a homer off Cole in last week’s Bronx series and is the key to unlocking the Cleveland offense against elite pitching.
🔴 Travis Bazzana (2B) — The rookie phenom has been one of baseball’s most pleasant surprises. Bazzana carries a .302/.407/.458 slash line with six doubles, three home runs, and 15 walks against only 19 strikeouts in 27 games, making a strong impression with his ability to consistently put together quality at-bats.
🔴 Kyle Manzardo (1B) — The first baseman has emerged as a dangerous middle-of-the-order threat. Manzardo has posted a near 1.0 OPS since May and smacked two home runs against the Yankees in last week’s series at Yankee Stadium. He’s the kind of hot bat that can change a game against a pitcher who’s still finding his footing.
Recent Form: A Tough Road Trip Ahead
The Tribe has had a rugged stretch. The Guardians lost two of three in Texas last weekend, capped by a 10-0 blowout loss Sunday. Coming home was supposed to provide a reset, but the 10-inning loss Monday stung. Tonight is a must-win situation to reclaim home-field momentum before the series wraps Wednesday.
The good news? Closer Cade Smith won the May AL Reliever of the Month Award and has helped lead the Cleveland Guardians to one of the best records in the league. If Cecconi can get into the sixth inning and hand a lead over to this bullpen, this city knows how to close it out.
Game time is 6:40 PM EDT at Progressive Field. Let’s go, Tribe. 🔴
