Guardians Open Three-Game Series in Houston Friday Night
The Cleveland Guardians have a day off Thursday before kicking off a crucial three-game road series against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park, beginning Friday, June 19. It’s part of a nine-game road trip against the Brewers, Astros, and White Sox — and with the injury bug biting hard in Cleveland, this trip has become an unexpected measuring stick for a banged-up ballclub.
The Guardians are navigating a brutal stretch of roster news. José Ramírez is on the 10-day IL with a left hamate fracture and underwent surgery on June 16, with manager Stephen Vogt saying the expectation is roughly a six-week recovery. Angel Martínez is also out with a left foot fracture, expected to miss 4–6 weeks. Chase DeLauter has also been placed on the 10-day IL after being diagnosed with a small fracture in his ribcage. That’s three key contributors wiped out in a matter of days.
On the Mound: Cantillo vs. Arrighetti
Cleveland will send Joey Cantillo to the mound to battle it out with Arrighetti. Cantillo is a 26-year-old southpaw who holds a 5-3 record in 2026. His most current line shows him at 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 52 strikeouts on the season. Cantillo has completed six innings just once this season in six trips to the mound as he continues to have trouble staying effective deeper into games — something Houston’s lineup will try to exploit early.
The Astros counter with their breakout ace. The 26-year-old Arrighetti has been just what manager Joe Espada needed this season — he is 7-1 with a 2.21 ERA and 1.9 WAR, working 57 innings with 53 strikeouts. He is the clear ace of the Astros’ staff with a 2.57 ERA across 11 starts this campaign, holding opponents to a .200 batting average. His last start on June 14 in Kansas City produced six innings of four-run ball and a loss, but his overall ERA barely moved because of how well he has played all year.

Scouting Houston: A Struggling Club With a Scary Lineup
The Astros enter at 33-41, going 16-20 at home — a club that’s been underperforming all season. But don’t let the record fool you. Yordan Alvarez remains one of baseball’s most dangerous hitters. His 11th homer of the season tied Lance Berkman for the most in franchise history through 26 games, and he was batting .385 with five homers and 16 RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak.
The full Guardians-Astros series rotation as announced: Friday: Tatsuya Imai (3-3, 6.43 ERA) vs. Tanner Bibee (2-7, 3.96 ERA); Saturday: Spencer Arrighetti (7-2, 2.57 ERA) vs. Joey Cantillo (5-3, 4.38 ERA); Sunday: Kai-Wei Teng (3-6, 4.31 ERA) vs. Slade Cecconi (3-5, 4.60 ERA).
Friday’s opener actually gives the Guardians a real opportunity. The transition from Japan to MLB has not been easy for Tatsuya Imai — the 28-year-old rookie will enter Friday’s game sitting at 3-3 with a 6.43 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP across nine starts. His walk rate is most concerning — he has offered up 24 free passes in just 35 innings.

Series Context: Revenge on the Road
Cleveland and Houston have already met multiple times this season, with previous series in April and the Guardians holding their own in that matchup. The Guardians lost the most recent April series at Progressive Field, 2–1, when Yordan Alvarez hit a two-run homer and Peter Lambert hurled six shutout innings as the Astros won 2-0.
Cleveland heads south having just dropped a tough series in Milwaukee. Garrett Mitchell hit a solo homer in the seventh inning to lift the Brewers to a 2-1 victory over the Guardians on Tuesday night. The Tribe is fighting to stay relevant in the AL Central race. The Cleveland Guardians are 2nd in the AL Central with a record of 38-33, 0.5 games out of first place. The injuries are not season-ending ones, making it even more important for this team to stay near the top of the AL Central when these players return.
Three Players to Watch
1. Joey Cantillo (SP) — Saturday starter, the pivotal game. Cantillo gets the marquee matchup against Arrighetti on Saturday. Despite some stumbles, Cantillo still owns a 3.20 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and a 30:12 K:BB ratio across 25.1 innings in recent outings. He needs to go deep into this one and give the bullpen a break.
2. Steven Kwan — Can he stay hot? While Kwan’s overall season stats still look rough, Cleveland should be encouraged with what he’s done at the plate over the last few weeks — since mid-May, Kwan has logged a .243/.357/.271 slash line with an 88 wRC+. With Ramirez, DeLauter, and Martinez all out, Kwan needs to be the spark every single game.
3. Kahlil Watson — Welcome to the Show. Watson showed an intriguing power/speed skill set at Triple-A this season, slugging 12 home runs and stealing 14 bases while slashing .255/.370/.491 with a 14.9 percent walk rate across 254 plate appearances. Contact concerns notwithstanding, Watson will get a chance to make an impact on a suddenly injury-depleted Guardians roster. This Houston series could be his coming-out party — or an early reality check at the big-league level.
The Bottom Line
This is a winnable series. The Astros are below .500, their rotation outside of Arrighetti is shaky, and the Guardians have the pitching to hang in every game. But Cleveland’s battered lineup has to find a way to manufacture runs without their biggest bat. The next month or so will tell a lot about the Guardians’ depth and character.
