Greenbrier Commons in Parma Heights Undergoes Major Transformation: New Library, Playground, Courts, and More Parma Heights residents are witnessing a significant revitalization of Greenbrier Commons, the city’s central recreational and civic hub at 6200 Pearl Road. Long-time visitors have seen major changes in recent months, including the demolition of the old library, closure of aging recreational facilities, and the rise of modern replacements. The project aims to create a more accessible, inclusive, and vibrant community space for years to come.
New State-of-the-Art Library OpensThe most visible upgrade is the new Cuyahoga County Public Library Parma Heights Branch, which officially opened on April 11, 2026. The 22,000-square-foot facility replaces the former 1963 “space-age” building (affectionately called “beautifully ugly” by some locals). It now sits at the former site of the old ice rink and connects directly to the Cleveland Metroparks Connector Trail.
The old library was demolished in May 2026. The site is currently being converted to interim green space, with city officials exploring future recreational uses and planning to announce additional details soon.
Playground Replacement Ahead of ScheduleThe beloved but aging Greenbrier Commons playground closed earlier in 2026 for a full replacement. Funded in part by a $150,000 Ohio Department of Natural Resources NatureWorks grant (total project ~$235,000), the new ADA-compliant play area features spinners, saucer swings, climbing walls/boulders, slides, swings, and accessible elements like a wheelchair ramp
As of mid-May 2026, installation was ahead of schedule, with major structures in place and base material work underway. Service Director Bob Sepik expressed optimism for an opening around or before Memorial Day 2026. City social media posts have shared progress photos showing the exciting transformation.
Tennis and Pickleball Courts RenovationRecreational players have also seen changes. The five tennis courts are being repaved (a process involving milling, new asphalt, curing time, and restriping), with two receiving pickleball lines for dual use. The existing two dedicated pickleball courts are expanding to three, plus an additional court. Courts closed for the work, which began in May 2026; officials expect them to reopen progressively through summer 2026, weather permitting.
Parking and Site Improvements
Additional work includes repaving parking lots serving the pool, courts, and Cassidy Theatre (~$450,000 project). This is scheduled to begin after the pool season (late summer 2026) and wrap up by the end of the year. The Parma Heights Pool itself reopened for the season on June 13, 2026.
Broader Vision for Greenbrier Commons
These upgrades align with the city’s long-term Master Plan, positioning Greenbrier Commons as a key civic and recreational anchor. While no comprehensive public renderings for the full campus redevelopment have been widely released yet (beyond the library), the focus remains on enhanced accessibility, family-friendly amenities, and better integration with surrounding trails and green space.
What’s Next and How to Stay Informed
Most improvements — new playground, renovated courts, and ongoing site work — should be available or completed through summer and fall 2026. Timelines can shift due to weather or construction variables, so residents are encouraged to check for real-time updates. Resources:
