For the first time in the 250-year history of the United States Navy, a U.S. warship will be commissioned in the State of Ohio — right here in its namesake city. The USS Cleveland (LCS-31), a state-of-the-art Freedom-class littoral combat ship, will officially join the fleet during Commissioning Week 2026, a once-in-a-generation celebration that will bring national attention to Cleveland’s waterfront and honor the strong bond between the city and the Navy. The USS Cleveland Legacy Foundation has organized a full week of public events, military ceremonies, community celebrations, and educational opportunities to welcome the ship’s crew and mark this milestone. Organizers say the week will blend Cleveland pride, naval tradition, and family-friendly fun while highlighting the ship’s role in modern maritime security. “This is more than a ship commissioning — it’s a homecoming for Cleveland’s newest legacy,” said a Foundation spokesperson. “For the first time, the people of Northeast Ohio get to welcome their namesake warship on Lake Erie and show the world what Cleveland spirit looks like.” What to Expect During Commissioning Week
The week begins with dramatic arrival events on Lake Erie and builds to the formal Commissioning Ceremony. Highlights include:
- A Welcome Flotilla of private boats greeting the ship as it sails into port.
- Community Color Guard stations along the lakefront where residents can wave American flags.
- A free, family-friendly Community Day with opportunities to meet sailors.
- Limited public tours aboard the USS Cleveland itself.
- The official Commissioning Ceremony on May 16, the emotional centerpiece of the week.
The events will take place primarily at North Coast Yard (515 Erieside Avenue) and along Cleveland’s lakefront parks. Public transit is encouraged, and visitors should plan for security screenings, valid ID requirements, and weather-appropriate clothing. How Clevelanders Can Get Involved
