Quick Facts
About KeyBank State Theatre
The KeyBank State Theatre is Playhouse Square’s largest single auditorium and one of the biggest theatrical spaces in Ohio. Opened in 1921 and designed by architect Thomas Lamb, it features soaring ceilings, elaborate plasterwork, and one of the most beautiful grand auditoriums in the Midwest — a space that feels both vast and intimate.
Restored in 1984 as part of the historic Playhouse Square preservation effort, the State Theatre is now home to the Cleveland Ballet and serves as the primary venue for the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF), one of the top film festivals in the United States. Its large capacity and exceptional acoustics make it ideal for ballet with full live orchestra, touring dance companies, classical concerts, and major film screenings.
