Guardians vs. Brewers: Cecconi Faces Tough Test in MKE

Guardians Open Three-Game Road Set in Milwaukee Tonight

The Cleveland Guardians head to American Family Field for the first game of a three-game interleague series tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers, with first pitch scheduled for 7:40 PM ET. This one comes at a critical moment — Cleveland is navigating the early fallout of losing their best player, and the Brewers are rolling as one of the NL’s hottest clubs.

The Big Picture: Standings

The Guardians, at 39-33, are tied with the White Sox atop the AL Central, though they lost their best player in José Ramírez to a hamate bone fracture over the weekend. Meanwhile, the Brewers, at 43-26, sit five games ahead of the second-place Cardinals in the NL Central and currently hold the No. 3 seed in the league, behind only the Braves and Dodgers. This is a tough road matchup for a Guardians club absorbing a painful blow.

The J-Ram Situation

Let’s address the elephant in the room. Guardians star José Ramírez suffered a fractured left hamate bone during the team’s 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. The big question following the imaging was whether surgery was needed to repair the hamate fracture — and unfortunately, the answer is yes. Manager Stephen Vogt said the team was still awaiting a date for the procedure, and that this type of injury typically takes five to seven weeks to heal.

A late July return should serve as the initial target date. That’s a long time. The Guardians need every man to step up in this series and beyond.

Starting Pitchers

CLE: Slade Cecconi (RHP)
Cecconi’s first season with the Cleveland Guardians was a success — after coming over in an offseason trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, he recorded a career-best ERA of 4.30 and a 1.19 WHIP in his first full season as a starter. But 2026 has been a rougher ride so far.

  • 2026 record: 3-5, ERA: 4.92, WHIP: 1.43, K: 54
  • ZiPS still sees Cecconi as a pitcher with elite command, a strength that has been one of his biggest throughout his career.
  • His increasing swing-and-miss and chase rate is his key to reaching the next level — and he’ll need that tonight in Milwaukee.

Cecconi needs a clean, deep outing badly. With Ramírez gone, the lineup needs length from the rotation to stay competitive.

MIL: Robert Gasser (LHP)
Gasser returned to the big leagues in September 2025 after Tommy John surgery. The 26-year-old southpaw attacks hitters with two distinct low-90s fastballs, a sweeper, a changeup and a seldom-thrown cutter, getting by on depth of arsenal, guile and pitchability rather than loud stuff.

  • 2026 MLB record: 0-3, ERA: 6.38 (per ESPN)
  • Gasser spent time this season in Triple-A, where he posted a 3.74 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 32:8 K:BB across 21.2 innings before his recall.
  • His 2026 Statcast numbers show an avg exit velocity against of 86.7, hard-hit rate of 30.4%, and a wOBA of .410.

Gasser is still finding his big-league footing post-TJ. This is a real opportunity for Cleveland’s offense — if they can get into his arsenal early, there’s a chance to knock him out and get to that Brewers bullpen.

Opponent Scouting: Milwaukee Brewers

Don’t sleep on this Milwaukee club. They’re one of baseball’s best stories in 2026. Jacob Misiorowski currently looks like the NL Cy Young favorite, leading the majors in ERA (1.34), strikeouts (131), FIP (1.69), and WHIP (0.736). He’s not pitching tonight, but he sets the tone for a rotation Cleveland will see across three games.

The Brewers are currently without pitchers DL Hall (late July), Brandon Woodruff (mid- to late June), Coleman Crow (late June), and Quinn Priester (TBD) — a sizable chunk of rotation depth. That’s one reason Gasser gets the ball tonight.

Players to Watch

🔴 Steven Kwan, LF (CLE)
The four-time Gold Glove Award winner has been inconsistent throughout 2026, but recently has seemed to turn a new leaf. Kwan has gone 12-for-35 (.343) with six runs scored over his last 10 games. With Ramírez out, Kwan becoming a consistent table-setter is non-negotiable.

🔴 Daniel Schneemann, 3B (CLE)
Schneemann is a prime candidate to fill in at third base with Ramírez out — he’s typically handled the hot corner when Ramírez served as the DH. All eyes on how he handles the expanded role.

🟡 Jackson Chourio, LF (MIL)
Across 35 games this year, Chourio is hitting .322/.370/.572 with nine homers, 11 doubles, 26 RBIs, 27 runs, and five steals. The 22-year-old Venezuelan phenom is absolutely mashing right now and just shared NL Player of the Week honors. Cecconi will need to be very careful with him.

Recent Team Form

  • Guardians (39-33): Tied atop the AL Central. Won their last series vs. Detroit but absorbed three injury hits — Ramírez (hamate fracture, IL), plus outfielders Chase DeLauter and Angel Martinez also left Saturday’s game early.
  • Brewers (43-26): Playing their best baseball of the year. Won the rubber match vs. Philadelphia on June 14 and bring strong momentum into this home series.
  • The Guardians have been the moneyline favorite 40 total times this season and finished 21-19 in those games.
  • Cleveland has entered games as underdogs 31 times this season and won 18 of them — a 58.1% clip. Tonight, they’ll likely be the dog again. They’ve handled that role well.

The Bottom Line

This is a measuring-stick series for a Guardians team suddenly playing shorthanded. Cecconi needs to turn in the outing his stuff suggests he’s capable of. The lineup needs to jump on a vulnerable Gasser early. And this team needs to show Cleveland that the AL Central lead won’t evaporate without J-Ram.
