Tribe Takes on Baseball’s Hottest Team in Milwaukee
The Cleveland Guardians kick off a nine-game road trip Monday with a full off day before opening a pivotal three-game Interleague series at American Family Field against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, June 16 (7:40 p.m. ET). This is no soft landing. Since sitting at 13-13 on April 26, Milwaukee has gone 27-10 — the best record in all of Major League Baseball during that span. The Guardians, meanwhile, arrive carrying some bumps and bruises and a need to rediscover their best baseball.

Guardians’ Recent Form
It has been a rocky stretch. The New York Yankees swept Cleveland at Progressive Field last week, stopping the Guardians’ streak of avoiding a sweep at 31 consecutive series — the longest such active stretch in the AL. The Guardians fell 8-4 to New York on June 10 — their first sweep of the 2026 season — and had dropped six of seven games entering the Detroit series.
The team bounced back some against the Tigers. Tanner Bibee had eight strikeouts to win his second straight start as Cleveland beat Detroit 3-2 on June 12, snapping a four-game losing streak. Bibee — who went 0-7 in his first 13 starts this season — allowed only two hits in seven-plus innings. The series finale on Sunday, June 14, was postponed due to rain.
- Overall record (entering series): 39-33, 1st in AL Central
- Last 10 games: 4-6
- Road record: 20-16 (.556)
Tuesday’s Starting Pitcher Matchup: Cecconi vs. Gasser
Slade Cecconi, RHP (CLE) — Cecconi carries a 3-5 record and 4.83 ERA into Tuesday’s start. He has been inconsistent this season, but showed flashes of his best stuff recently. Cecconi allowed just three earned runs over 11 innings in his two most recent starts against the Yankees, including a two-earned-run, seven-strikeout performance in five innings on June 9. Manager Stephen Vogt was encouraged. “I thought he was moving the ball in and out,” Vogt said. “The cutter was really good today.” He called Cecconi “fantastic.”
- 2026 line: 3-5, 4.83 ERA, 61 SO
- Key stat: ZiPS sees Cecconi as a pitcher with elite command — a strength throughout his career.
- Context: Cecconi came to Cleveland in an offseason trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Robert Gasser, LHP (MIL) — Gasser underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2024 and returned to the big leagues in September 2025, positioning himself as a rotation option for 2026. His 2026 season has been bumpy. He’s posted a 6.38 ERA and 1.58 WHIP while allowing six homers across 18.1 innings. The 26-year-old southpaw attacks hitters with two distinct low-90s fastballs, a sweeper, a changeup, and a seldom-thrown cutter — getting by on depth of arsenal and pitchability rather than loud stuff.
- 2026 line: 0-3, 6.38 ERA, 19 SO
- Watch for: Gasser has been homer-prone — six allowed in just 18.1 IP. Cleveland’s power bats should be licking their chops.
Wednesday’s Pitching Matchup: Williams vs. Sproat
Gavin Williams won’t start as scheduled against the Tigers since Sunday’s game was postponed, giving him extra rest before taking the mound Wednesday in Milwaukee. That might be exactly what the ace needs. Over his last three starts, Williams had surrendered 26 hits and 12 earned runs — a notable shift — but he still owns a 3.67 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and .225 batting average against on the season.
- Williams 2026 line: 9-3, 3.32 ERA, 99 SO
- Opponent: Brandon Sproat (MIL) — 1-4, 5.70 ERA, 57 SO
- Edge: Heavily to Cleveland — Williams remains one of the best starters in the American League.
Thursday’s Pitching Matchup: Messick vs. TBD
Parker Messick (LHP) takes the ball Thursday, carrying a 6-3 record and 2.68 ERA with 82 strikeouts — making him one of the most effective starters in all of baseball this season. After a rough outing against the Yankees in the sweep, Messick will be motivated to bounce back in a big way.
Opponent Scouting: Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers now sit at 43-26 with a +105 run differential — the 2026 Milwaukee Brewers have had more success through the first 10 weeks of the season than any team in franchise history. The Brewers were the best team in baseball during the 2025 regular season, and their 2026 squad is off to an even better start.
- Record: 43-26, best in NL
- Home record: 24-17 at American Family Field
- Key weapon: Jacob Misiorowski — the electric young righty who is not scheduled for this series but whose shadow looms large over this Brewers club
- Betting context: Milwaukee is 30-15 in games where they were listed as the moneyline favorite, winning 66.7% of those contests.
3 Players to Watch
1. José Ramírez, 3B
The heart of Cleveland. Earlier this month, Ramírez was hitting .412 with 10 homers, 10 doubles, 22 RBIs, 31 runs, and 10 stolen bases in 36 career regular-season games at Yankee Stadium. Now the question is health — Ramírez suffered a hamate bone fracture Saturday and is expected to be without the seven-time All-Star for the next several weeks. His status for Milwaukee is a major storyline entering this series. The Guardians will need others to step up in a big way.
2. Travis Bazzana, 2B
The 23-year-old second baseman debuted on April 28, 2026, for the Guardians — the first overall pick of the 2024 MLB Draft. Bazzana hit a three-run double off Camilo Doval earlier this month in a big New York win, finishing with four RBIs. With Ramírez potentially sidelined, the rookie’s bat and energy at the top of the lineup become even more critical against a Brewers staff that will test his plate discipline.
3. Kyle Manzardo, 1B
Manzardo homered in back-to-back games in New York earlier this month, and José Ramírez launched one of Cleveland’s three home runs off Gerrit Cole during the Guardians’ June 3 win over the Yankees. Cleveland has won 52.5% of games this season when favored, and has been the underdog 31 times, winning 18 — 58.1% — of those contests. Manzardo’s power from the left side will be a key variable against Milwaukee’s pitching.
Series Context
This Milwaukee series (June 16-18) is one of Cleveland’s eight Interleague road series this season. It’s the opening leg of the Guardians’ longest road trip of the year — nine games against the Brewers, Astros, and White Sox from June 16-24. How Cleveland responds after a tough homestand says everything about this club’s identity and postseason ambitions.
The Tribe needs to find its footing — fast. At 39-33, Cleveland leads the AL Central, but the margin is thinning and the competition is stiffening. A series win in Milwaukee would be a massive statement.
