Cantillo vs. The Comeback Kid: Game 2 Saturday at Progressive Field
Cleveland bounced back in a big way Friday night, and now the Guardians have a chance to take the series — but Saturday’s 4:10 p.m. matchup just got a whole lot more interesting. Two-time reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal is expected to be activated before Saturday’s game after having arthroscopic surgery last month to remove loose bodies from his left elbow. That’s right, Cleveland — Skubal is back. Don’t sleep on this one.
Friday Night Quick Take: Momentum Heading In
Tanner Bibee had eight strikeouts to win his second straight start as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Friday night to snap a four-game losing streak. Cade Smith retired the Tigers in order in the ninth for his MLB-leading 22nd save. The Guardians needed that one badly. Now let’s build on it.

Joey Cantillo (LHP) — Cleveland Guardians
LHP Joey Cantillo (4-3, 4.57 ERA) will go for Cleveland. The 26-year-old Hawaiian lefty has been Cleveland’s most consistent rotation piece this season, but he’ll need to be sharper than his recent form suggests.

- Recent form: Given up four earned runs in three of his last four starts, balancing out to a 3.92 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 62 innings this season.

- Statcast 2026: Avg exit velocity 88.1 mph, hard-hit rate 37.7%, wOBA .355, xwOBA .331, barrel rate 9.4%.
Cantillo’s changeup and extension are his calling cards. He’ll need to command the zone and limit traffic, especially against a Tigers lineup that is playing its best ball of the season and entered the series 7-2 in June with 23 home runs.
Tarik Skubal (LHP) — Detroit Tigers
This is the story of the day. Skubal needed just 32 days to turn an elbow surgery timeline into a headline. This was supposed to be a longer wait for the Tigers’ ace — instead, his first rehab start made the original injury estimate look suddenly conservative.
- 2026 pre-injury stats: 3-2 record, 2.70 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and 45 strikeouts across 43.1 innings in seven starts.
- Surgery: Needed surgery to remove loose bodies in his left elbow, a procedure often expected to cost pitchers two to three months.
- Recovery method: Underwent a new, less invasive procedure called the NanoScope that greatly sped up his rehab.
- Rehab start: Threw five scoreless innings for High-A West Michigan one month and one day after surgery, on 54 pitches with six strikeouts.
- Pitch mix: Four-seamer (39.0%), changeup (25.7%), sinker (18.7%), slider (13.7%), curveball (2.9%).
The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner (2024, 2025) is back on a big stage. The big question: how sharp is he after more than five weeks off? Cleveland’s lineup gets a crackathat answer on a Saturday afternoon at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario.
Opponent Scouting: Detroit Tigers
The Tigers enter Saturday with a 22-38 record (.367). That’s a tough position in the standings, but don’t let the record fool you — this team has been heating up.

- Power surge: Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene had two of the Tigers’ six homers in an 11-0 rout of the Twins to clinch their third straight series win.

- Free agency cloud: Skubal will be a free agent after the season, and if the Tigers are unable to climb back into postseason position, they will have to seriously entertain trading their ace prior to the Aug. 3 deadline.

The Guardians opened this three-game series against Detroit on Friday, June 12 at Progressive Field. Entering the series, the Guardians (37-33) were coming off a sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees, which dropped them into second place in the AL Central behind the Chicago White Sox.

🔴 José Ramírez, 3B
J-Ram is Cleveland’s heartbeat, and he’s been breaking out of a slow start in style. Ramírez opened the month of June on a high note, going 3-for-5 with a career-high-tying three doubles in the Guardians’ 9-4 win over the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. He carries a 42.9% hard-hit rate and 90.3 mph average exit velocity — both career highs — making him one of the Majors’ unluckiest hitters based on quality of contact. The hits are coming. Don’t look away.
🔴 Angel Martínez, OF/INF
The 24-year-old switch-hitter has been a breakout star in 2026. Martínez is hitting .270/.314/.507 with nine home runs, and he has the unique opportunity to learn the craft of switch-hitting from one of the game’s best in José Ramírez. He scored in Friday’s Game 1 win and figures to be a key piece in the middle of the lineup Saturday.
🔴 Joey Cantillo, LHP
This is a defining start for the young lefty. Facing a two-time Cy Young winner making a buzzworthy comeback, Cantillo has the chance to steal the narrative and remind the AL Central that Cleveland’s rotation is for real. The 6-foot-4 lefty from Hawaii posted a 31.1% whiff rate, 27.0% K-rate, 48.1% ground ball rate, and 99th percentile extension — the underlying stuff is legitimate. Time to show it.
