Guardians Open Detroit Series Tonight at Progressive Field
It’s a big Friday night at The Corner of Ontario and Carnegie, Cleveland. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. ET as your Cleveland Guardians welcome the Detroit Tigers for a three-game home series — and the pitching matchup tonight couldn’t be more intriguing. Tanner Bibee gets the ball for Cleveland against Detroit’s Jack Flaherty in the series opener. Buckle up, CLE.
Series Context: AL Central Stakes
The Guardians enter this series with a narrow lead in the AL Central, sitting at 37-32 in their bid for a third consecutive division title. The Tigers, meanwhile, are firmly in the rearview mirror. Detroit is 28-39 on the season and currently sitting 4th in the AL Central. This is a series Cleveland absolutely needs to take care of business on home turf — and tonight’s game sets the tone for the whole weekend.
On the Mound: Tanner Bibee
Tanner Bibee steps in fresh off arguably the best outing of his 2026 campaign and riding a wave of earned confidence. On June 6, Bibee pitched through eight innings, delivering a three-hit, two-walk, three-strikeout performance en route to a 6-0 shutout win over the Texas Rangers. That wasn’t just a win — it was a statement.
The backstory makes tonight even more compelling. Bibee had become the first pitcher in club history without a win after their first 13 starts of the season. The reason? A run-support drought that was almost historically cruel. The biggest thing that had kept him from earning a victory was something completely out of his control — run support, as Bibee had received one or fewer runs in 10 of his first 13 starts.
Bibee’s 2026 numbers through 14 starts:
- ERA: 4.09
- WHIP: 1.23
- BAA: .246
- Strikeouts: 63 on the season
- Last start (June 6 vs. TEX): 8.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB — 87 pitches
The right-hander is lined up for a favorable matchup at home against Detroit for this next start. After the offense finally showed up for him in Texas, the key question is whether Cleveland’s bats can give him consistent support tonight.
On the Mound: Jack Flaherty (DET)
Here’s where it gets interesting for Cleveland’s hitters. Jack Flaherty has been one of the more frustrating stories in the AL this season — talented, but wildly inconsistent. The righty is 1-7 with a 5.31 ERA across 14 starts and 62.2 innings pitched in 2026.
Flaherty’s 2026 season snapshot:
- Record: 1-7
- ERA: 5.31
- IP: 62.2
- Strikeouts: 77
- Recent trend: He has allowed three earned runs or more in five of his last six appearances.
There is a silver lining for Detroit — Flaherty has posted a 35:7 K:BB ratio in his last 29 innings with just three home runs allowed. His strikeout stuff has been working even when the results haven’t followed. Still, after earning his first win of the season his last time out, Flaherty was unable to fully carry that momentum into his next start, sitting with an underwhelming 5.31 ERA overall. Cleveland’s lineup should be licking its chops.
Opponent Scouting: Detroit Tigers
Don’t sleep on the Tigers’ offense, though. The biggest name to watch in Detroit’s lineup is catcher Dillon Dingler, who is absolutely scorching right now. After batting just .140 over his final 12 games of May, Dingler has fueled the Tigers’ 6-1 start to June, slashing .393/.438/1.000 with five home runs, 14 RBI and nine runs. The 27-year-old currently ranks third among all catchers in home runs (16) and first in RBI (48) on the season.
In the outfield, Riley Greene is batting .316 over his last 10 contests with three home runs, five runs scored and six RBI. He’s a real threat Bibee will need to be careful with.
Players to Watch: Cleveland Guardians
1. José Ramírez, 3B — The Captain has found his stroke since a slow start. He’s slashing .280/.365/.478 with six homers, 25 RBI, five stolen bases and 25 runs scored through 43 games this season. Ramírez has at least one extra-base hit in five of his last six contests, a sign he may be fully out of his early power slump. Against a shakeable Flaherty, JRam could do serious damage tonight.
2. Tanner Bibee, SP — Yes, he’s on both lists tonight. This is a massive start for Bibee’s confidence and the team’s momentum. After that eight-inning gem in Arlington, as the Guardians prepare for a homestand against Detroit, giving Bibee that extra boost of confidence and momentum has a chance to work wonders. We’re watching to see if Version 2.0 Bibee has truly arrived.
3. Travis Bazzana, 2B — The young second baseman has been in a bit of a funk. Bazzana’s first-inning single in Wednesday’s game snapped an 0-for-17 stretch, which is part of a larger slump — over the last eight contests, Bazzana is 4-for-31 (.129). Can a home series against a beatable Detroit rotation help him snap out of it?
Recent Team Form
The Guardians are coming off a tough series against the Yankees in which Parker Messick took a loss, giving up five runs on five hits and three walks over 5.2 innings, with triples by Jazz Chisholm and Trent Grisham playing big roles in three-run frames for New York. It wasn’t the send-off they wanted heading into this homestand.
On the bright side, Cleveland’s pitching staff has been a backbone all year. The pitching staff has posted a 3.73 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP while holding opponents to a .237 batting average. If Bibee can be Bibee, and the Guardians’ lineup can capitalize on a struggling Flaherty, tonight has the makings of a statement win in the AL Central race.
