Guardians vs. Yankees: Series Finale Preview, June 10

Guardians Host Yankees in Series Finale — 1:10 PM at Progressive Field

Wednesday afternoon at Progressive Field, the Cleveland Guardians look to salvage a series split against the New York Yankees in the rubber match of this three-game home set. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM ET. This is a rematch rivalry with real stakes — two AL contenders who simply do not like losing to each other.

Series Context

This series has been a gut-punch. The Guardians enter at 37-32 after dropping Game 2 on Tuesday, 3-2. The two AL contenders met in New York last week, with Cleveland winning twice and outscoring New York 15-10 on aggregate. Cleveland had all the momentum coming into this homestand — and now they need a win Wednesday to avoid getting swept at home by their most formidable rival.

  • Season series: Cleveland won two of three against New York last week and led the 2026 season series 2-1 heading into this homestand.
  • Recent Guardians skid: Cleveland has lost three in a row and allowed 20 runs in those three losses.
  • Yankees momentum: New York comes in having won four of their last five games and is looking to complete a series sweep.
  • Road/home splits: The Yankees are 21-14 on the road this year, while the Guardians are 17-16 at home.

Starting Pitchers

Cleveland: Parker Messick (LHP)

This is Cleveland’s most exciting young arm, and the kid keeps delivering. The Guardians have a legitimate AL Rookie of the Year candidate in Parker Messick, who has emerged as one of the best starters in the league.

  • 2026 record: 6-1, 2.21 ERA, 74 strikeouts, 1.067 WHIP over 69.1 innings in 12 starts.
  • ROY heat: The 25-year-old left-hander has moved up to third in MLB.com’s latest Rookie of the Year poll, leading AL rookies in wins, innings, and strikeouts while ranking second in ERA and WHIP.
  • Today’s assignment: He will get his next chance to impress when he takes the mound Wednesday in the series finale against the Yankees at Progressive Field.
  • Recent form: Messick has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his last five starts.

This is the matchup Guardians fans should feel good about. Messick has been nearly unhittable at times this season and facing the Yankees without Aaron Judge in the lineup is about as favorable a spot as a young lefty can ask for.

New York: Carlos Rodón (LHP)

The Yankees counter with a veteran southpaw who is still rounding back into form after returning from injury. Rodón carries a 2.88 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 27:16 K:BB over 24.2 innings into what is set to be a rematch versus the Guardians in Cleveland.

  • 2026 season line: 1-2 record, 2.88 ERA, 1.20 WHIP over 25.0 innings pitched.
  • Control issues: Rodón has been very difficult to hit, surrendering four knocks or fewer in all five starts, but control has been an issue — he’s issued multiple walks in every outing.
  • Injury backstory: Rodón opened the season on the injured list while recovering from left elbow surgery he underwent in October.

If Cleveland’s lineup can work pitch counts and draw walks early, this could be a short night for Rodón. The Guardians are one of the hardest clubs in baseball to strike out — that is a problem for a lefty still finding his command.

Opponent Scouting: Yankees Without Judge

Big news: the Bronx Bombers are playing shorthanded at the top. The Yankees announced that Aaron Judge has been diagnosed with a stress fracture of the first rib on his right side, requiring a period of rest and limited activity. He is set to miss four to six weeks.

The danger man now is first baseman Ben Rice. Rice has broken out as one of the game’s premier hitters in 2026, slashing .300/.393/.638 with 17 home runs and a 181 wRC+ in his first 57 games of the season. The Guardians’ pitching staff simply cannot give this guy anything to hit.

  • Yankees team ERA: New York carries a 3.25 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and .223 opponent batting average in 2026.
  • Also out for NYY: Judge joins Jasson Domínguez (shoulder), Max Fried (elbow), and Giancarlo Stanton (calf) on the injured list.
  • Yankees road record: New York is 21-14 on the road this season.

Players to Watch

⚾ Parker Messick, SP (CLE)

Messick is making a strong case for his first AL All-Star selection — his ERA ranks third in the league overall, and his WHIP ranks eighth. A quality start today does wonders for that résumé. Big-game moment for the kid from Plant City, Florida.

⚾ José Ramírez, 3B (CLE)

Ramírez is getting some offensive help from young players like Travis Bazzana and Chase DeLauter this year, but make no mistake — he is the Cleveland hitter the opposition fears the most. Ramírez homered off Gerrit Cole in the previous series matchup, and he remains a difficult matchup for any pitcher. In a series finale, JRam is exactly who you want stepping up.

⚾ Chase DeLauter, OF/DH (CLE)

DeLauter has led the Guardians with seven home runs and 34 RBIs this season. He is batting .254 with 11 doubles, a triple, seven home runs, and 26 walks. DeLauter is exactly the kind of patient, professional hitter who can exploit Rodón’s control problems. Keep an eye on him early in counts.

The Bottom Line

Cleveland needs this one badly. Dropping three straight to a Judge-less Yankees squad at home would sting. The good news? Messick is exactly the arm you want on the mound in a must-win spot, and Rodón’s walk rate gives the Guardians’ patient lineup a clear path to inflicting early damage. Progressive Field is ready. Let’s get one back.
