Playhouse Square, the nation’s second-largest performing arts center, announced its most extensive season lineup ever on Tuesday, featuring 47 productions that will grace its five historic theaters between September 2026 and June 2027. The ambitious programming includes a dozen touring Broadway productions, four world premiere productions developed in partnership with Cleveland-based theater companies, an expanded jazz series, and increased performance dates for resident arts organizations including the Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Ballet, and Great Lakes Theater. Officials estimate the season will attract more than 1.2 million attendees and generate over $165 million in economic impact for downtown Cleveland.
Playhouse Square President and CEO Craig Hassall described the season as a celebration of both artistic excellence and Cleveland’s growing reputation as a major destination for live entertainment. Highlights include the national tours of three recent Tony Award-winning musicals, a new production of a classic American play commissioned specifically for the KeyBank State Theatre, and a residency by an internationally acclaimed dance company. The lineup also features significantly expanded programming aimed at younger audiences, including family-friendly productions and a new series of interactive theater experiences designed to introduce children to live performance.
The announcement comes as Playhouse Square continues to recover and expand beyond pre-pandemic attendance levels, with the 2025-2026 season on track to exceed ticket sales projections by 18%. The theater district has benefited from increased downtown residential population, improved regional transit connections, and growing tourism to Cleveland’s cultural attractions. Playhouse Square has also invested heavily in technological upgrades to its historic theaters, including improved acoustics, modernized lighting systems, and enhanced accessibility features that allow the venues to host more technically complex productions.
Season subscriptions go on sale next month, with single tickets becoming available in July. Playhouse Square has maintained its commitment to accessible pricing, with programs offering discounted tickets for students, seniors, and low-income families. The organization also announced an expanded partnership with Cleveland Metropolitan School District to bring 15,000 students to weekday matinee performances at no cost to families, part of its ongoing arts education initiative. Theater industry observers note that Playhouse Square’s programming scale and ambition increasingly rival those of major coastal cities, reflecting Cleveland’s strengthening position in the national performing arts landscape.
