The Cleveland Guardians have a chance to steal this series on Sunday afternoon. It’s the finale of a three-game set at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, with first pitch scheduled for 2:35 PM ET. The Rangers are back home, but it’s only for three games against the leaders in the American League Central Division. Cleveland holds the tiebreaker, so every road win matters. Let’s break it down.
The Pitching Matchup
For Cleveland: LHP Joey Cantillo
Cantillo enters Sunday’s game with a 4-2 record and a 3.57 ERA on the season. He’s been one of the quietly impressive stories in the AL this year. Not many would have guessed that two of the Cleveland Guardians’ most reliable and consistent starting pitchers would both be lefties — both of whom were at one point in Triple-A back in 2025.

- Last start vs. NYY: Cantillo went four innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs, and three walks in a no-decision against the Yankees on June 2.
- The positive: Manager Stephen Vogt noted that Cantillo is more sure of himself — “he knows who he is, and he knows what he needs to do to go compete.”
Sunday’s matchup against Texas is a bounce-back opportunity. Hitting from the opposite side that Cantillo throws from, Kyle Manzardo will have an edge in today’s matchup. The lefty will need to be sharper with his command if he’s going to outduel what’s on the other side of the diamond.
For Texas: RHP Jacob deGrom
This is the heavyweight challenge. The veteran righty has been both healthy and good in 2026, posting a 3.48 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 78:13 K:BB over 64.2 frames. But there are cracks showing.

- Home run problem: deGrom has already allowed 13 homers so far this season, which is already half as many as he gave up in 172.2 innings during the 2025 regular season.
- Last start (June 1 vs. STL): deGrom threw five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and issuing one walk while striking out eight — dominating the Cardinals’ lineup and racking up 17 whiffs.
- Recent form: deGrom had a rough patch in May during which he allowed 10 runs over nine frames across two starts, but has bounced back by yielding just two runs across 11 innings over his subsequent two appearances.
- Career milestone: Monday’s victory over St. Louis was more than a win for deGrom — it was his 100th career win.
Series Context
This series is knotted at one game apiece heading into Sunday. On Friday, Corey Seager hit a go-ahead homer to end a career-worst 0-for-29 slump in his first game for Texas in more than three weeks, and Kyle Higashioka also went deep as the Rangers beat Cleveland 3-2. Then the Guardians answered with authority on Saturday. Tanner Bibee pitched eight scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season, and Jose Ramirez and Brayan Rocchio hit solo home runs to power Cleveland to a 6-0 win — Bibee allowing just three hits, walking two and fanning three.
Bibee was also the first pitcher in franchise history to go winless in his first 13 starts of a season, making Saturday’s dominant outing that much sweeter. Now the Guardians want to close out this road series on a high note before a big homestand looms.
Opponent Scouting: Texas Rangers
The Rangers entered this series at 30-32, hosting the Cleveland Guardians who came in at 36-28. Texas has been streaky but dangerous. With Wyatt Langford and Corey Seager healthy again, the Rangers have a more dangerous lineup to slow down.

🔴 Travis Bazzana (CLE) — The rookie continues to dazzle. Bazzana went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a triple, and a stolen base in Friday’s game. He returned to the leadoff spot and belted his first career leadoff homer — his fourth home run in 34 games. He’s been electric all weekend.

Recent Team Form
The Guardians have dropped four of their last six games entering this series, a bit of a bump after a dominant stretch earlier in the year. But Saturday’s dominant win steadied the ship and as the Guardians prepare for a homestand against the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers next week, giving Bibee that extra boost of confidence has a chance to work wonders.
