Merchants at the West Side Market are celebrating what many describe as a renaissance following the completion of an $11 million renovation project that modernized the beloved Cleveland institution while preserving its historic character. Vendor representatives report that customer traffic has increased by approximately 40 percent compared to pre-renovation figures, with weekend crowds regularly exceeding 15,000 visitors. The improvements, which wrapped up in December 2025, included upgraded refrigeration systems, restored architectural details, improved accessibility features, and enhanced customer amenities.
Longtime vendor Frank Campbell, whose family has operated Campbell’s Popcorn Shop at the market since 1938, said the changes have brought in a noticeably younger and more diverse customer base. The renovation added modern restroom facilities, expanded seating areas, and improved lighting throughout the 137-vendor complex while maintaining the market’s distinctive early 20th-century aesthetic. City officials invested in the project after years of deferred maintenance had led to declining foot traffic and vendor concerns about the facility’s long-term viability.
The market’s resurgence comes as Cleveland experiences broader momentum in its food scene, with the Ohio City neighborhood surrounding West Side Market seeing significant residential and commercial development. Several vendors have expanded their offerings and hired additional staff to meet increased demand. Market Manager Tasha Anastasia noted that the waiting list for vendor stalls has grown to more than 50 applicants, the longest in the market’s recent history.
The City of Cleveland, which owns and operates the market, commissioned an economic impact study that found the renovated facility now generates approximately $45 million in annual economic activity for the surrounding neighborhood. The success has prompted city officials to explore similar renovation investments in other public markets, including the Lincoln Park Market on the city’s west side.
