Rather\, its the beginning of an important dialogue with a close loved one\, vocalist Julia Steiner finds herself estranged from. The music on the bands sixth studio album its first for New West Records fills the space that person left behind with 11 songs showcasing Ratboys at the peak of their powers twangy\, effervescent\, as confident as theyve ever been\, and perhaps more emotionally interrogative than ever before. The four-piece Chicago band followed up 2023s highly acclaimed The Window by reconvening with co-producer Chris Walla to begin tracking at a rural Wisconsin cabin before taking the songs to Steve Albinis famed Electrical Audio studios in Chicago and later to Rosebud Studio in Evanston\, Illinois. The results veer from bubbly power-pop on Anywhere to irresistible post-country on Penny in the Lake\, along with heart-piercing ballads like Just Want You to Know the Truth and an exhilarating detour into the extraterrestrial on Light Night Mountains All That\, which Steiner dubs the bands mammoth wormhole jam. Singin to an Empty Chair also marks the first Ratboys album written since Steiner began therapy\, which the singer/lyricist credits for the clarity found across the albums unflinching examinations of relationship and self. Fittingly\, as the album begins by extending a hand into the void\, it concludes with a scene of serenity all while weaving candid honesty\, humor\, chaos\, and whimsy along the way. Its not all doom and gloom\, Steiner says. The experience of making this record definitely gives me hope for whatever happens next.

Yes\, of course thereve been changes since guitarist/vocalist Jon Davis founded the group in 2006\, but the intention at the time toward superlative heavy tonal extremity wrought with impressionist lyrics stripping ideas to the core where sometimes the whole line is just one word; theyve always called it Caveman Battle Doom remains at the root of everything theyve done since. And across five studio records in the decade from 2012-2022\, Conan have set the standard by which much of heavy anything is judged. And in comparison\, most is found wanting.But for every time youve heard about Conans music being like galloping steeds or frost-covered sharp-peaked mountains\, etc.\, imagery of largesse and violence\, the truth is Conan are an exercise in frequency. Its the low resonance that shakes your chest\, the depth of the bass now handled by David Ryley (ex-Fudge Tunnel) the push of air from Johnny Kings kick drum\, or the way the dark-fuzz distortion of Davis guitar is offset by shouting vocals cutting through that sometimes punishing onslaught\, rarely to offer comfort so much as add viciousness to the crash\, plod and pillage.In 2024\, Conan sign to Heavy Psych Sounds as a recognized name and one of the foremost acts of their generation\, wildly influential in their home country of the UK and well beyond; headliners in practice and theory alike. Their fifth LP\, 2022s Evidence of Immortality\, brought a dark ambience to coincide with its outright attack. With experiments in darkwave and synth adding breadth to the stated root purpose of aural force\, its never been harder to guess where the next few years might take their sound\, but whatevers coming\, Conan will make it kill. Duo Lee Buford and Chip King have established their own musical language that reimagines how rhythm\, dynamics\, and sonics can shape or dismantle song structure. Over the course of two decades\, the duo has consistently challenged assumptions and defied categorization\, redefining what it means to be a heavy band. On their new album\, The Body are again pushing limits and testing the boundaries of the studio to explore the extremes and microtonality of distortion to find its maximal impact. Ive Seen All I Need To See is The Body at their most incisively bleak\, a towering monolith of noise.BIG|BRAVEs preternatural instincts and depth of skill as musicians are on full display on their most naked and austere record to date\, OST. The trio entered the studio with broader concepts and themes in mind\, but no preconceived music. The overarching concept was to make a film score for a film that had yet to be created\, to use minimal instrumentation\, or more specifically not their standard band instruments\, and to improvise within these parameters. Although this record could stand on its own\, we envisioned it being paired with moving images\, which introduced a fresh and exciting way of working\, notes guitarist Mathieu Ball. In addition to forgoing their usual instrumentation\, they notably built their own. Ball created a stringed instrument using piano strings simply called The Instrument. This instrument ended up becoming a central figure to the OSTs sound. Guitarist/vocalist Robin Wattie adds: The strings Mathieu used for his instrument came from a discarded piano thatch that had been laying around in the hallway of my tattoo studio for ages. The Instruments presence is felt throughout the record as a conductive element amplifying the albums earthly\, grounded nature.
